Chapter Thirteen

“Z

oe, run!”

Her scream was the only thing I heard before silence settled in. Both she and the dogs were quiet. The only audible sound was the click and whir of the air conditioner as it cycled on.

“Please don’t hurt them. Please leave Zoe alone. I’ll do what you ask, write whatever it is you want me to write,” I pleaded to Phin, who still held me at his mercy, especially with Zoe as his bargaining chip. That thought halted my panic for a split second. Who had silenced my sister? Eris was still here in the room, gloating as Phin reveled in his control. My question was immediately answered when the tall man with tanned skin and leather pants we’d seen at the Tavern the other night walked into the room with Zoe in his grasp. Fear and pain were splayed across her features, and all I could do was mouth, I’m sorry. I’m so, so sorry.

“Oh good. We’re all here,” Phin baited.

“You remember me mentioning Dominic. You know, the one who prefers to knock things down and stomp them into the ground. I told you they’d leave with me; all you had to do was write my story,” Eris chided.

“I did write your story. It will be the success you intended it to be, and yet now it seems you’ve changed the rules. Rules I never even knew existed,” I retorted, with more moxie than I should have under the circumstances.

“Ah, but she cheated,” Phin added, “and now you’re going to right her wrong.”

I started to reply with a sarcastic comment, but I opted to keep my opinions to myself once I caught sight of the look on Zoe’s face. She was scared, and I didn’t want to make it worse for her. “If I do this, you all will leave us alone— for good, yes?

Dominic narrowed his eyes at me. “Who are you to demand anything? We can do as we please.”

Phin disregarded Dominic’s statement. “We can, but I am enjoying the prospect of winning round two of this wager,” he said with narrowed eyes, “as long as it’s a fair one.”

Dominic shoved Zoe away from him, knocking her to the ground. She quickly scooted over to the wall by the window and pulled her knees to her chest, unsure what to do other than remain silent. “You called me here to intervene in another one of your games?” he growled.

“Of sorts.” Eris answered Dom as she fiddled with her nails. “I hedged my bets, and Phin’s a sore loser.”

“Find someone else to join in on your bullshit wagers. I thought I was going to enjoy my evening, but if it doesn’t involve sex or death or both, I’m not interested.” He glanced at Zoe and me. “And I’m not interested in either of them.”

“Death can come later. For now, little miss writer here has work to do.” Phin grinned as he pushed down into my chair. “Write!”

I looked back at him. “It doesn’t work like that. I need inspiration and time.
